Dr. Mizuho Nita is an Associate Professor and Extension Plant Pathologist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with over 26 years of experience working with pathogens of fruit crops. His research interests are applied plant pathology, epidemiology, and alternative control options for grape diseases. He has been working on a wide range of viticulture- and grape pathology-related topics, including, but not limited to, grapevine viruses, fungal pathogens (grape ripe rot, Phomopsis, etc.), a bacterial biological control agent of grapevine crown gall, rapid detection of pathogens and pests with canine companions, organic viticulture options, and cultivar evaluations. He communicates regularly with stakeholders in Virginia and the surrounding states through his extension appointment. In addition to contributing to various state and regional extension guides, he developed a web-based pesticide planning and application aid called grapeIPM.org, which is used by growers, county agents, consultants, and specialists to implement IPM practices.
