CONNECTED (Community Network for Vector-Borne Plant Viruses) is a multidisciplinary research and capacity building network that seeks to tackle crop diseases spread by insects globally. The Network brings together plant pathology and entomology communities to tackle the complex problems of vector-borne crop diseases. The CONNECTED Network comprises more than1600 members across 93 countries, this community represents a valuable resource of technical expertise and knowledge, and is a pool of potential international collaborators.
During its establishment a significant stakeholder engagement activity was undertaken to focus the network activity, this identified two key areas, the first being support and development of early career scientists and the second being support, training and networking around diagnostic methodologies.
CONNECTED developed strategic partnerships with IITA in Nigeria (who now host the network) and BecA-ILRI Hub in Kenya and through these partnerships funded international research, delivered innovative training, and ran networking events focused primarily on diagnostics for early career researchers. The CONNECTED Network has funded a portfolio of 20 innovative international projects involving 14 countries, 11 different crops, and collaborations of 55 researchers in 34 institutions, each representing a new productive collaboration between UK and African institutions.
The Network has delivered over 100 training opportunities awarded for multidisciplinary courses or educational visits for delegates from 18 different countries. The Network is free to join and members can access a online resources, including diagnostic training manuals and other educational materials.
