Discussion: A successful career in extension requires a foundation of training in a specialty area so as to be relevant to clientele and stakeholders. Developing good communication skills is a must and includes writing, using different media forms, effectively conversing with a wide range of people, and providing science based information in a manner that is appropriate for the audience. Graduate students can gain valuable experiences by attending industry-related meetings and events and make presentations whenever possible. Volunteer work can provide helpful exposure and experience to a range of stakeholders in agriculture including those in urban settings. Extension professionals have an opportunity to communicate science in a way that encourages adoption to improve pest management, limit crop losses, and make a positive difference.
