The STDF/PG/753 project "Mitigating Pesticide Residues in Latin America Using Biopesticides", aims to reduce pesticide residues in exported crops from Latin America and the Caribbean by promoting biopesticides within integrated pest and disease management (IPM). A key component is Output 3 (years 2024- 2025), focused on field and laboratory trials with national teams in 11 countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Paraguay, Colombia and Perú), prioritizing minor food crops like banana, pineapple, chili pepper, tangerine, okra, loroco, lemon, purple passion fruit and snow pea. In addition to pesticide residue declining, trials evaluate bio efficacy against diseases (black sigatoka, gray mold, black spot, Ascochyta blight) and pests (thrips, mites, mealybugs), replacing conventional pesticides (triazoles, strobilurins, benzimidazoles, organophosphates, neonicotinoids, pyrroles, etc.) near crop harvest, by bacteria, fungi and plant-based biopesticides. The Regional Center of Excellence for Latin America and the Caribbean in Pesticide Sciences at the National University in Colombia with IICA, MUF and allied institutions, facilitate training on field trials and residue analysis with good agricultural and laboratory practices. South-South cooperation, training, building capabilities and data from the trials will enhance residue mitigation strategies and bio-efficacy understanding, for safer and higher-quality crop production for local and international markets, overcoming Maximum Residue Limit-related trade barriers.
