Cyst nematodes (Heterodera and Globodera) are one of the most damaging groups of plant pathogens in vegetable production worldwide. In Korea, management of Heterodera spp. is a serious economic issue in Chinese cabbage production. With an increasing demand for pesticide residue-free vegetables, there is an increasing demand for ecofriendly nematicides. Consequently, botanical nematicides are taking the lead as replacements for synthetic nematicides. In this study, the nematicidal activity of Kigelia africana and Zanthoxylum chalybeum powder and the chemical characterization of their extracts were investigated. The phytochemical analysis of the extracts were analyzed by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. The most abundant metabolites in K. africana were methyl tetradecanoate, 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, hexadecenoic acid, and methyl stearate. 2-Tridecanone, methyl tetradecanoate, 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, and hexadecenoic acid were the dominant metabolites in Z. chalybeum. The hexane extracts exhibited nematicidal activity against Heterodera schachtii, with EC90/24h values of 359 and 1134 ppm for K. africana and Z. chalybeum respectively. Kigelia africana powder exhibited a 100% control efficacy when incorporated in soil at 80 g/kg but, was phytotoxic. Interestingly, Z. chalybeum powder exhibited an 86% control efficacy when incorporated in soil at 80 g/kg and significantly enhanced Chinese cabbage growth in a dose-response manner. Therefore, bio-fertilizing Z. chalybeum powder controls H. schachtii and enhances cabbage growth.
